Every year on June 20th the world comes together to commemorate World Refugee Day, a time to recognize the strength, resilience, and courage of people who have been forced to flee their home countries due to conflict, persecution, and human rights violations. For ReWA, this day is deeply personal.
There are millions of refugees around the globe – mothers, fathers, children. At Refugee Women’s Alliance (ReWA), we see beyond the statistics. We see the dedication of a mother learning English after work. We see the strength of young people navigating a new culture while holding onto their heritage. We see resilience, hope, and opportunity.
Since our founding in 1985, ReWA has been a community of support for refugee and immigrant women and families throughout Seattle and King County. Our programs – ranging from mental health counseling to job readiness, early childhood education, and gender-based violence survivor support —aim to restore dignity and self-sufficiency.
This year’s global theme “Together We Rise” calls on us to reflect on what it takes to build a sense of belonging. It asks us to imagine how we, as neighbors, co-workers, and community members, can make room for the hopes and talents refugees bring with them.
At ReWA, we see every day how powerful hope can be when it’s nurtured through community. Today, and every day, we honor their journeys, amplify their voices, and celebrate their strength.
