Help refugee and immigrant adults achieve self-sufficiency in
the U.S. by teaching English and literacy to small groups and individuals
in a class of about 20 students. Help refugees and immigrants prepare
to pass the citizenship test by conducting mock interviews. Assist
the ESL or citizenship teacher with planned activities and lessons.
Learn ESL teaching methods and techniques through working with
a professional ESL/citizenship teacher. Help provide a comfortable
environment for students to express themselves and practice English.
Qualifications:
Desire to work with and help people from diverse cultures and
backgrounds
Patience, flexibility, and a sense of humor
Commitment to a student-centered approach to learning
Willingness to participate in a 12-hour basic ESL training
(cost: $10) at SCCC and a 3-hour orientation and training at
ReWA
Ability to work at least one morning, afternoon or evening
per week in one of the following time-spots:
Mornings: Monday to Thursday, 9:00 am-noon
Afternoons: Monday to Thursday, 1:00 to 3:00 pm
Evenings: Tuesday and Thursday, 6:00 to 8:00 pm
Willingness to make a 6-month commitment to the program
Ability to pass a Washington State Patrol background check
Responsibilities:
Assist the ESL or citizenship teacher by working with individual
students and small groups
Record students’ progress and the number of hours spent tutoring
each quarter
Work with volunteer coordinator, teachers and other volunteers
Attend quarterly orientations, in-service trainings and feedback
sessions
