ESL or Citizenship Team Teacher - Evening Tutoring Program
Help refugee and immigrant adults learn English, gain familiarity with U.S. culture and resources and/or become U.S. citizens. Provide a comfortable environment for students to express themselves and practice English. Work with other volunteers and volunteer coordinator to provide student-centered instruction designed to help refugee and immigrant students improve their literacy and speaking skills and study to pass the citizenship test.
Qualifications:
- Desire to work with and help people from diverse cultures and backgrounds
- Patience, flexibility, and a sense of humor
- Commitment to a student-centered approach to learning
- Willingness to participate in a 12-hour basic ESL training (cost: $10) at SCCC and a 3-hour orientation and training at ReWA. Tacoma Community House Training Project - Basic ESL Training
- Ability to work at least one evening per week in the following time-slot: Tuesdays and Thursdays - 6:00-8:00 pm
- Willingness to make a six-month commitment to the program
- Ability to pass a Washington State Patrol background check
Responsibilities:
- Coordinate with another volunteer teacher to develop a ten-week curriculum around a set of student identified themes
- Plan lessons which are relevant and meaningful to your students, considering their levels and experiences
- Maintain a file of lesson plans and activities that you have used in your teaching sessions
- Record the number of hours spent teaching each quarter
- Record each student’s attendance and progress
- Attend quarterly orientations, in-service training and feedback sessions
- Evaluate the program quarterly
