Informed Mothers for healthy babies
In partnership with the Washington
Chapter of March of Dimes
Project Description
The
Informed Mothers for Healthy Babies
project
utilizes ReWA’s extensive network of services to immigrant and refugee women
to educate and link at-risk women to prevention services to reduce birth
defects, prematurity, and infant mortality. Utilizing our proven
peer-education model, we have reached King County refugee and immigrant
women of childbearing age, including those who have had genital mutilation
or were victims of rape at a young age during war in their home country.
ReWA's Informed Mothers for Healthy Babies Project provides culturally
and linguistically relevant education, support and guidance workshops that
can lead to improved maternal health and healthy babies for refugee and
immigrant families. Project components include: community outreach,
educational workshops in the native language of participants, home visits,
peer educators who will educate others one-on-one, and provides resource and
referral linkage to state and local maternal health programs and services.
Through partnerships with the University of Washington and Seattle
University Schools of Nursing, ReWA has developed multi-lingual training
materials that address sensitive issues of refugee women. Comprehensive
curriculum and evaluation tools are used to ensure quality information is
delivered and taught in ways that sensitively meet client needs. ReWA’s
learning from this project benefits many others trying to serve these
vulnerable women to reduce birth defects, prematurity and infant mortality.
Workshops run quarterly by multi-ethnic staff both on-site and/or
off-site.
