Refugee and immigrant parents have many questions about rearing
healthy and successful children in the United States.
To have
their questions answered, however, they need parenting information
that is culturally appropriate and linguistically accessible.
The overall goal of ReWA's Parent Education Program is to provide
refugee and immigrant parents with skills, information and support
that will empower them to rear successful and emotionally healthy
children in the United States. Since the difficulty of acculturation
is often exacerbated by isolation and lack of peer support, the
Parent Education Program is designed to decrease isolation of refugee
and immigrant families and increase peer support networks for parents.
The key components of the Parent Education Program include:
-
Parent education workshops throughout the community
- Monthly parent support groups providing opportunities for parents
and caretakers to discuss issues and concerns around rearing
children in a new country and culture
- Home visits to individual families to provide in-house parenting
support and assessment.
- Parent Advisory Committee to foster parents' leadership
- Support services through bilingual and bicultural staff
