Sample Daytime Classes

Vocational ESL/Job Club

Volunteers: Assist ESL teachers by working with individual students and small groups. No lesson planning required.

Program: Pre-employment ESL classes integrate language training, workplace communication, critical thinking and problem solving. Curriculum topics include: skills assessment, preparing a resume, looking for work and job interviews. Bilingual coaches and job developer available to assist participants who are ready to work.

Beginning ESL

Volunteers: Assist ESL teacher by working with individual students and small groups. No lesson planning required.

Program: Seattle Central Community College’s basic ESL and literacy class using the SCCC/ Washington State Refugee Curriculum. Topics include: learning letters and sounds, basic vocabulary, personal information, numbers, handling emergencies, shopping and transportation. Bilingual/bicultural support in class.

ESL Citizenship

Volunteers: Assist citizenship teachers by working with individual students and small groups. No lesson planning required.

Program: Citizenship classes for students who have low-level speaking, reading, and writing skills. Oral presentations of ESL/citizenship concepts through pictures and other ESL strategies.

Citizenship Preparation

Volunteers: Assist citizenship teachers by working with individual students and small groups. No lesson planning required.

Program: A higher level citizenship class that presents citizenship themes around the acquiring of listening, reading and writing skills. Teachers go over the 100 review questions and practice mock interviews.
