Refugee Women's Alliance

Serving refugee and immigrant women and families

Domestic Violence Program

To break away from the cycle of family violence, refugees and immigrants need services that meet their cultural and linguistic needs. The refugee and immigrant communities present special challenges to domestic violence providers. The decision to leave an abusive relationship may result in alienation from a victim's ethnic and religious community due to shame, stigma and traditional cultural values that may minimize the gravity of family violence.

Refugee Women's Alliance began offering victim advocacy and support in 1985. ReWA's bilingual/bicultural domestic violence advocates work with refugee and immigrant women to help them apply for protection orders, develop safety plans, access safe shelters, understand and navigate the legal system, and advocate for basic needs and services.

ReWA's Domestic Violence Program strives to increase the safety of women in every community. Through culturally and linguistically competent victim services, community referrals, comprehensive community education and support groups, ReWA works to reduce barriers facing refugee and immigrant victims of domestic violence and increase the well-being and safety of a vulnerable and isolated population.

The Domestic Violence Program provides comprehensive and culturally appropriate advocacy and support to immigrant and refugee victims of family violence including:

  • Victim advocacy and support services in 15 languages.
  • Support groups for refugee and immigrant battered women and those at risk of becoming victims of domestic violence.
  • Community education and outreach to increase awareness of domestic violence, sexual assault, and human trafficking issues in the refugee and immigrant communities.
  • Consultation and education training to service providers and law enforcement agencies.
